Small Business SEO: Enquiries, Not a Traffic Chart

Search engine optimisation (SEO) for a small business means getting found in Google’s map pack, and in the search results under it, by people nearby who are ready to buy, on a budget an owner can carry.

Learn the basics with us from $150 an hour plus GST, or hand the work over from $2,000 a month, month to month, with a free audit first. We use data, we do not guess, because a small budget has no room for a month spent on a hunch.

Ben was incredibly helpful when I reached out to him for some website design support. He really went above and beyond to support me with my queries even though I was not yet a paying client. His knowledge of web design made everything much easier to understand. I highly recommend Perth Digital Edge to anyone looking for professional and reliable web design services.

Ben did an awesome job with Sell My Car Pro. He took care of everything from the website development and SEO through to the graphic design, branding and logo. He was easy to work with, kept things simple, and we started getting results before we had even spent anything on ads. Really happy with how it all turned out and would definitely recommend him.

We engaged Ben from Perth Digital Edge to help us sort out our Google Ads, Analytics, Tag Manager setup and to provide training so we could manage campaigns ourselves with confidence. Ben was fantastic to work with. He took the time to understand our business and goals, untangled our existing setup, and gave us clear, practical guidance every step of the way. What really stood out was his transparency. He worked on an hourly rate, stuck to his word on budget and timelines, and delivered exactly what he committed to. He is incredibly knowledgeable, but also down to earth and easy to work with. No jargon, no fluff, just honest advice, smart solutions and a genuine interest in helping us succeed. We are already seeing improvements and feel much more confident managing our own campaigns. Highly recommend Ben if you're after someone reliable, responsive and great at what he does.

Perth Digital Edge were wonderful in dealing with me the entire process from web design to seo optimisation and Digital Marketing customized for my purposes. I couldn't have asked for someone who cares more about their work and always strives for perfection. I was always given the pros and cons of any decisions ahead of time, as well as what the expected timeframe for results would be. Thank you so much to Ben for all his hard work. I won't trust anyone else with my web design or seo needs.

My website/s were desperate need of a refresh after several years of neglect. Inception Video is in a competitive marketspace and we service two very different market spaces so the website had the added difficulty of needing to service and speak to two very different clients. I approached Ben from Perth Digital Edge to design me a new website that has a vibrant visual appeal (as I work in a visual market) and strong SEO functionality to assist with my digital marketing. I'm thrilled with the results from the team at Perth Digital Edge and the design of my new website. It ticks all the boxes. I'm also very impressed with the time Ben took to understand my needs, how flexible he was in adjusting the pages to accommodate my two marketplaces and the training he gave me in moving from Wix to Wordpress so that I can now continue to evolve my website.

Ben did a fantastic job with the re-development of my old outdated website, he has since taken over my SEO service and there is lots of communication and results which unfortunately lacks with other SEO companies

What to pay for, and what to skip

A small business does not need everything an SEO agency can sell, only the handful of things that make the phone ring. The mistakes we inherit repeat: broad terms that attract the wrong target audience, content nobody asked for, and a profile set up once and never touched. We do not sell keyword caps; the scope of each campaign comes from your own Search Console data.

Worth paying for

  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile that keeps gathering reviews
  • One page for each core service, in the words customers search with, with your contact details in view before anyone scrolls
  • A site that loads quickly on mobile devices and that search engines can crawl without errors
  • Content that answers what potential customers ask before they book
  • The same four whether you are a plumber, a physio or a professional services firm

Usually safe to skip

  • A blog nobody reads
  • Thin suburb pages with the place name swapped
  • Purchased links
  • Long tail keywords nobody types, padding a search rankings report
  • A monthly report that counts impressions instead of enquiries

Do these yourself this week

These are the SEO tips we give every small business owner first. None needs an agency, and none costs anything.

01

Complete your Business Profile

Sign in at business.google.com, pick the closest primary category, and add every service, your service area, hours and real photos. Use the name on your signage, with no suburbs or keywords added.

02

Ask every customer for a review

Copy the review link from your profile and text it to each customer the day the job is done. Reply to every review, the bad ones included.

03

Give each service its own page

One page per core service, naming the suburbs you cover, with your phone number at the top. A single page listing everything matches no search well.

04

Set up Google Search Console

Verify your site at search.google.com/search-console and submit your sitemap. It shows the searches you appear for and the clicks each page earns, the plainest measure of your website’s visibility.

Your Business Profile and Search Console are the essential tools, and both are free. Check where you stand with our free SEO site audit scorecard, then book SEO training to work through all four on your own site, at $150 an hour plus GST.

Perth searches and what a click costs

Search for the service itself is modest. Ahrefs puts “small business SEO” at about 700 searches a month across Australia and “SEO for small business” at about 600; three of the four main phrasings show an AI overview.

Your customers search far more, and their search intent is plain. All seven searches below show a map pack, and none shows an AI overview.

Paid or earned

Google Ads charges for every one of those clicks, about US$13 each for a garage door repair. A map pack position earns them with no bill per click, which is the case for organic search beside paid ads.

Suburbs count

“Plumber Joondalup” draws about 450 searches a month, and Ahrefs rates it 26 out of 100 to rank for, against 52 for “plumber Perth”. Location specific keywords like it are where a small site wins first.

Two sets of numbers

The chart is Ahrefs, labelled and dated so you can check it. Your campaign is planned on Google’s own Keyword Planner and Search Console data.

What Perth does to a small business

Four things about this city shape a small business SEO strategy here.

The local market is the market

Perth is one of the most isolated capital cities on earth, and about four in five West Australians live in it. Growth means winning more of the same suburbs, which is what a local SEO strategy is for.

Two Rocks to Mandurah

The metro area runs well over a hundred kilometres along the coast, and nobody in Baldivis drives to Butler for a garage door. Google names distance as one of three things behind local search results, with relevance and popularity.

The resources cycle

When the mines slow, marketing is the first cost cut. Demand moves to whoever is still visible, so SEO efforts kept up through the quiet years take share.

The clock

Western Australia never moves its clocks, so an ad schedule set on Sydney time goes dark here mid afternoon. Local knowledge sounds minor until it costs you the 3pm call.

What SEO costs a small business

Price is usually the first question, so it sits here. Our SEO campaigns run month to month with no keyword caps, and the free audit shows which option fits your business model. What moves the price:

Growth package

to $5,500 a month

  • Content marketing and earned links
  • Suburb pages where the data justifies them
  • Deeper technical work

Google Ads can run beside either package on a flat fee, never a percentage of spend, with about $1,500 a month in media as a sensible start. If the site cannot rank, web design is quoted separately, from around $2,500. Our SEO packages guide compares packages across the market.

Why a small budget needs Google’s own numbers

An agency with a national client can absorb a wrong guess. A business paying $2,000 a month cannot, so every plan starts from Google’s own record of your site. Pick a source.

How a campaign runs on a small budget

Three stages, ordered by your data and your business goals.

01

Month one

No changes yet. The SEO audit reads your Search Console and Analytics data, crawls the site, checks your profile and citations, and finds who holds the map pack. You get the two or three priorities that move enquiries first.

02

Months two to six

The priorities go in, usually the profile and reviews first, then technical faults, then a page per service, then useful content. Link outreach starts once there is a page worth pointing to.

03

Month seven onward

Positions won are defended, new services or suburbs are added where the data supports them, and ad spend is trimmed as organic enquiries replace paid ones.

Small businesses in AI answers

AI search is not reserved for big brands.

A small site, widely cited

On 4 October 2026 Ahrefs counted about 480 citations of slideandglide.com.au in AI answers, from 52 pages, across six platforms including Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT.

Buying searches, unchanged so far

Ahrefs shows no AI overview for “best plumber Perth” or “best dentist Perth”, but “how to unblock a drain” and “how much does teeth whitening cost” both show one.

Measured, not sold

Citations are part of your online visibility, counted beside enquiries when we meet. Nobody can promise one, and the method is on our AI search optimisation page.

Prices published for Australian businesses, checked on 4 October 2026, ran from about $450 a month in a niche market to more than $4,500 in a crowded one. Ours: training from $150 an hour plus GST, the Local package at $2,000 to $2,800 a month and the Growth package at $3,000 to $5,500. The free audit shows which SEO investment fits.

Yes, the basics: a complete Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews, a page per service and Search Console set up. SEO training covers them on your own site. Paying someone makes sense once competitive industries or multiple locations make the job bigger than your evenings.

For one area and a few services, it does most of the work. Google’s own guide names relevance, distance and popularity as the main factors in local results, and popularity draws on reviews and links from other sites, so the profile still needs a site with a page per service.

In a 2017 video on hiring an SEO, Google said that in most cases SEOs need four months to a year to help a business first implement improvements and then see potential benefit. We plan on that basis; profile and technical fixes can move sooner, and crowded metro suburbs take longer.

The work that moves enquiries: your profile managed, a page per core service, technical fixes and earned links, and someone who meets you to go through the numbers. Be wary of packages priced by keyword count or promising a position by a date.

It can be, if the hours go on the right jobs. One published price list ties three to ten hours of work a month to its lowest band. Spent on a profile, reviews and service pages, that can move a quiet market; spent on reports, it moves nothing.

Ask for named clients, dated results, published prices and professional credentials you can check. A reputable agency will open your Search Console with you in the first meeting. We are a Google Partner, an Ahrefs Agency Partner and an AWIA member.

No. The honest answer is that Google decides search engine results and keeps changing how. What we can promise: every decision rests on Google’s own data, you see it too, and you can leave on thirty days notice.
